17-β-雌二醇，是一種代表性的性激素。17-β-雌二醇可用卵巢、胎盤等制備，在卵泡液、胎盤、妊娠馬尿中均可檢出。進入子宮上皮細胞后，與性激素受體形成復合體進入細胞核，從而促進新的蛋白質(zhì)合成，具有引起細胞增殖的作用。此外，能影響未成熟或切除卵巢的大鼠或小鼠的陰道分泌物，使呈現(xiàn)由角化細胞組成的顯微鏡象，所以也用作生物試驗。
此外，雌激素還能增加骨骼鈣鹽的沉積，加速骨骺閉合，大劑量時能升高血清甘油三脂和磷脂，引起水鈉潴留。較大劑量時雌激素還能作用下丘腦-垂體系統(tǒng)，抑制促性腺激素及催乳素的分泌，并能抵消雄激素的主要作用。
